India’s Public Distribution System (PDS) is a rights-based food security system aiming to provide subsidised and necessary food grains to the vulnerable sections of the population and has been benefitting more than 80 crores of the country’s population under the National Food Security Act. Being the world’s biggest food safety net scheme, the PDS system plays a crucial role in reducing hunger, maintaining food price stability, and catering to the nutritional requirements of the poorer sections of society through the network of the Fair Price Shops. It is empowered by implicating various reforms like digitization, Aadhar authentication process, and online flow monitoring, making it more targeted and transparent with passing years. This scheme strongly supports the SDG 2030 targets, primarily Zero Hunger, No Poverty, and Responsible Consumption, making it an essential foundation for achieving inclusive growth and food security for all by 2030.
